Abstract : Multiport converters (MPCs) are a specific type of power electronic architecture designed to interface simultaneously with multiple electric energy sources and loads that are in close proximity. Examples of such applications include electric vehicles, standalone renewable energy systems, and portable electronic devices. MPCs are attractive from both cost and size perspectives, thanks to their integrated, compact converter design, making them a potentially cost-effective solution. However, two major concerns hinder their widespread adoption: the complexity of circuitry and control, and the reliability of the converters. To achieve a compact design, some power components within the MPC circuitry are shared among various input sources and output loads. This leads to a more "congested" converter operation, which can negatively impact power conversion quality, including power conditioning and output regulation. Consequently, several issues may arise, including cross-regulation problems, limited operational modes, and significant computational burdens. This talk will introduce common MPC topologies and discuss their converter structures, control challenges and reliability issues related to component failure rates. The main objective is to provide the audience with practical tools for analysing the reliability of MPC circuits, ensuring stable, smooth control, and ultimately improving overall controllability and reliability.
