Abstract : Integrated multiport power converters (IMPCs) combine multiple power conversion stages into a single structure, sharing semiconductor devices and passive components. This integration enables higher power density, reduced component count, and simplified system level control compared with independent single port converters. To maximise applicability in systems such as drones and portable power units, IMPCs should incorporate both DC and AC ports.
The full bridge inverter remains a widely adopted topology due to its four quadrant operation, soft switching capability, and efficient utilisation of magnetic components. Its multi switch structure also makes it a suitable platform for port integration. However, a fundamental challenge arises from the conflicting switching requirements of DC/DC and DC/AC conversion within the same circuit. Currently, hybrid modulation methods, such as PWM combined with SPWM or PFM combined with SPWM, help ease these control constraints but typically allow only the addition of one extra DC port.
We recently introduced a dual PFM combined with SPWM scheme that enables two independent DC input ports to be integrated into the full bridge inverter, forming a new three port topology. By separating the switching frequency domains, each port can be regulated with reduced cross coupling. Remaining challenges include managing the required switching frequency range, achieving effective power decoupling, and mitigating DC bus voltage stress.
